What is Mindful Chess?
Mindful Chess is a nonprofit organization (registered in Missouri) that aims to mitigate the severity of the dementia in older populations in the United States by providing chess services to senior living centers.
What is Mindful Chess' Mission
Currently, dementia is a widespread condition among older populations that leaves senior citizens with memory loss and difficulty in everyday life. Columbia University researchers have found that nearly 10% of U.S. adults ages 65 and older have dementia, while an additional 22% have mild cognitive impairment. Despite extensive research into dementia, there is no single “cure” for the condition. However, preliminary research by The National Library of Medicine in 2019 found that individuals who played board games were over 35% less likely to develop dementia. Additionally, people over the age of 75 that partake in brain-stimulating activities such as chess delayed symptoms of dementia in the short term. Mindful Chess gives senior citizens access to chess in hopes of strengthening the minds of seniors at best and bringing the community together under a love for chess at least.
